Mount St. Helens with Ben Coffman

Ben at Ben Coffman Photography is responsible for bring us this masterpiece. Taken from the bowels of Washington, the subject in the foreground is one of the most recognizable volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest, Mt. St. Helens, which is famous for its devastating eruption in 1980. Of course, the Milky Way is the backdrop that lifts this picture from cool to excellent.

When Ben released this picture, he mentioned, "I can"t speak for all photographers, but for me St. Helens is notoriously uncooperative when it comes to weather--it seems to delight in covering itself in clouds, mist, and fog, like a grumpy old man unwilling to get out of bed. When we arrived, the area was completely shut in with fog. Visibility was maybe 50 feet. But our patience was rewarded with great views when, slowly, the whole mess lifted, leaving only a river of low-lying fog in the valleys below the mountain."
